Mr Methven served in Northern Ireland and on two tours of Afghanistan before leaving the army in 2019 and now teaches the bagpipes. He added, “She grabbed my arm again and said, ‘You know, Pipes, if anyone has a problem with this, tell them I said it’s okay to go.” Don’t wait to ask anyone, just go home when your family needs you because family comes first.” He said: “I stood by the Queen and she said, ‘If you’re not here in the morning and you’re not playing the bagpipes, then I know you’re gone. The Queen also sent the nurses on duty a basket of strawberries and muffins, and Mr Methven said his son has frequently spoken to the Duke of Edinburgh about his love of red squirrels.Īfter his wife’s diagnosis, he said the Queen told him to “put family first”. Mr Methven was the Queen’s 15th Piper, having been created by Queen Victoria in 1843 after enjoying the sound of the bagpipes while on holiday at Taymouth Castle The couple’s children were allowed to stay at Balmoral Castle and looked after by royal nannies while Mr Methven tended his wife in hospital and his five-year-old son Fearghas (corr) played with Prince George. He said, “She once joked that I was the first piper to hold the post she didn’t have to look up to – a jibe at my 5ft 6in height.” The Queen, who was known to be petite at around 5ft 3in, also joked about Mr Methven’s height. “I replied that I got lost in the palace and she laughed, realizing that as children she used to get lost with Princess Margaret all the time.” So long as the school continues to turn out such highly trained pipers and drummers, the future of this wonderful music is assured, which in turn means that you and I can continue to be enchanted by the skirl of the pipes.Mr Methven said he was “briefly unmasked” while playing the bagpipes outside Windsor Castle on a windy morning and said the Queen later joked about the incident The school is part of the Institute of Piping, the institute sets a standardised piping certificate programme for students from around the world. If you’re keen to check out these bundles for yourself, you can click here for the core bundle or here for the adventures bundle. It’s also a lot less essential than the first bundle that I covered in this post as nothing here is actually needed to play 13th Age. There’s not much that would be needed here for players, with the possible exceptions of those who want to use some of the new races or the demonologist class that are present in the first tier. The inclusion of maps is particularly handy to just ensure that the GM has everything that would needed to run these encounters.Īll in all, this is a bundle aimed at GMs and is very good in that regard. Having these plug-and-play battle scenarios would definitely be useful to many people. What I do know is that combat encounters can, for some GMs, be tricky to design. Each set describes challenging fights at all levels (one set of battles for each of the three tiers of play) with dangerous foes on unusual terrain, all mapped in full color.īattle scenes are not an area of 13th Age that I’m particularly familiar with, so I can’t speak about this tier is particular detail. Short combat scenarios keyed to the 13 iconic characters who rule the Dragon Empire. Battle scenes, according to the bundle age, are: This tier consists of a total of 121 battle scenes. The first tier of this bundle costs $14.95 and contains three items: This bundle does rely on the core materials that were offered in the previous bundle. Players should definitely look to pick up the first tier, though. I say ‘running’ because, as is common with these bundles, there’s a lot of material here that’s only really going to be useful to the GM. This is a really solid bundle and should be an auto-buy for anyone interesting in running a game of 13th Age. There’s some additional content in this tier, including some material from 13th Age Monthly, some first level adventures, and an exclusive campaign that is only available as part of this bundle. This is a decent book for a GM to keep handy. It’s an interesting approach where it lists themes such as ‘Archmage’, ‘Emperor’ and ‘Lich King’. Unlike a lot of equipment books, this one organises the various magic items by theme rather than function. If you’re looking for an epic dungeon delve with a nice twist, this is a good book. The living dungeon concept is one I’ve been talking about with friends recently, so it’s a cool coincidence that this bundle with this particular book should come out just now! The book is very detailed, with even small areas of the map broken down, developed and explained to the GM. it’s a sizable campaign that focuses on a living dungeon. I like the entries for the demonic Cambions, the interesting Warbanners, and the terrifying Ettercaps.Įyes of the Stone Thief really appeals to me. The book has your typical offerings like Bugbears, Hags, Ogres and the like, but also a few unique offerings. The most useful book is the 13th Age Bestiary, the Monster Manual of 13th Age. There are a couple of highlights in this tier. It is priced on a threshold which, at the time of writing, is sitting at $33.21. The second tier of this bundle is pretty big, with 7 additional items on top of what you got in the first tier. My favourite additions are the Chaos Mage (which is crazy fun) and the Necromancer. The book fleshes out the setting with information about various cities and types of monster. This book does not represent a huge departure from D&D, thematically, but it does do some interesting things – particularly in regards to making it really easy and practical to play without maps and minis by tweaking how distances are reported.ġ3 True Ways is where I think 13th Age starts to develop more of its own voice. The book is beautifully produced, with some really nice artwork throughout. Players and GMs will need a copy of this for character creation and the actual rules of the game. The core book is obviously the most essential item in this bundle. Visit help.ea.com for assistance or inquiries.ĮA may retire online features after 30 days’ notice posted on ea.com/service-updates. I remember a time when I checked RE7 on PS4 store and it was around 8k ratings, long after launch. Popular games like Pop1, Onward, Blade and Sorcery and of course Beat Saber all have above 10k ratings in the Quest store. I’d say Quest 2 is around the 10 million mark already. Number of ratings users gave to Quest 2 there is more than 20k, more than double than that of series S, which launched roughly around the same time and a bit cheaper but is not a true nextgen console. neither PS5 or xbox series X are to be found. If we look at amazon videogame best sellers, Quest 2 has been in the top positions since at least october last year, it’s alone there as hardware – atop it only cards, well below you see switch and down there an xbox series S. compared to other consoles like Playstation or Switch, so they may prefer to stick to their policy of minimal disclosure. With USD 850mn store revenue since the Quest 2 launch and 30% of that going to Meta, 10mn units sold would mean USD 85 software sales for every heavily subsidized USD 300+ Quest, USD 25.5 would have went to Meta. They have avoided giving absolute numbers so far, most likely to somewhat hide how little money they actually make back from their VR investments. With estimates on active users it looks like retention rate on Quest might still be low, with only about 1/3 of all users still active after a few months, so even 10mn units sold could mean only 3.3mn active users, still far from what he suggested as required. For one he was referring to people being active and and purchasing on the platform, not units sold. We are somewhat fixated on that 10mn units number, as Zuckerberg declared it the minimum number of users for a self sustaining platform, but I’m not sure they would announce reaching it. Meta hasn’t offered any detail breaking down the $1.5 billion figure, but we take it that it includes games, apps, DLC, and subscriptions sold through both the official Quest store and App Lab, and may also include cross-buy titles that were purchased to be played on the Oculus PC platform. Surely the recent price hike of Quest 2 is a notable variable that needs to be considered. We’ll need to see how much activity the Quest store earns over the course of Q4 and the holidays before we can be certain that this apparent deceleration is seasonal or a more broad effect. This, however, is to be expected considering the seasonality of the gaming industry which tends to ramp up considerably in Q4 (and this figure from Meta is only at the very beginning of Q4). Though the platform continues to grow, the growth itself has decelerated somewhat. This milestone shows the Quest platform continuing to grow in revenue the average monthly store revenue has increased from $50.6 million to nearly $60 million since the last milestone the company shared in February 2022. Though Meta has still yet to share official unit sales for its Quest headsets, at Connect 2022 this month the company confirmed that the Quest store has surpassed $1.5 billion in purchased software since the platform launched in 2019. The article previously covered the $1 billion milestone. Update (October 18th, 2022): Article updated with the latest Quest platform revenue milestone from Meta of $1.5 billion. At Connect 2022 this month, Meta announced the Quest content store has surpassed $1.5 billion in purchased VR content since its launch in 2019, representing continued but decelerating growth likely due mostly to market seasonality.

It was a huge success - “Take Five” became the greatest selling jazz record of all time and the biggest success of Brubeck’s career. They wanted him to go home and write some dance tunes quickly. When he brought in his now-classic Time Out album, featuring “Take Five” and other pieces in odd time signatures, the record company told him it would never fly, since it’s impossible to dance to anything outside of a strict 4/4 meter. “There’s too much distance between the performer and the audience.” It’s that distance that he’s been trying to overcome over the years, convinced that the public, much more than the honchos of the record companies who often call the shots, can appreciate all the complexity and richness his music can hold. “You can’t hear anything at the Bowl,” he said. On the present release, both versions of this masterpiece can be compared. The Dave Brubeck Quartet, “Take Five” by Paul Desmond.īrubeck was in town to play that night at the Hollywood Bowl with his quintet. Over time, the mono versions were condemned to oblivion, and only recently some music fans began to value these long forgotten masters, which capture classic performances from a different aural point of view. The stereo albums, thus, were slightly more expensive than their mono counterparts. This was explained at the time by the fact that Stereo was still a very recent innovation, and not everyone had sound systems capable of reproducing the new technology. In the late 1950s, it was common for big labels to record performances simultaneously in mono and stereo, and then release both versions at the same time, with different reference numbers. LP 2: THE MONO VERSION (Columbia CL 1397) LP 1: THE STEREO VERSION (Columbia CS 8192) However, one of the most catchy melodies on that album, “Take Five”, was a Paul Desmond composition, and it would become the quartet’s most celebrated tune. Most of the songs were composed by Brubeck, as is the case on the album "Time Out". The formation took the challenge to experiment with musical forms foreign to jazz and, in addition to playing standard tunes like everyone else, they introduced many new compositions that gave the formation its identity. Brubeck’s fame even led to him being featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1954 (the second jazz musician to receive the distinction Louis Armstrong was previously honored in 1949), a fact that was questioned by many black jazzmen like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, who rightly felt that they should have been there themselves and saw in the choice of Brubeck a form of racism.ĭespite the possible overreaction by the press, the popularity of the Dave Brubeck Quartet was real, as was the singularity of their music. They had begun playing in colleges, and slowly made their way into concert halls and jazz festivals. By 1959, the group with Paul Desmond (the bass player and the drummer changed a few times until Joe Morello arrived in 1956 and Eugene Wright joined the group in 1958/59) had been in existence for nearly a decade and it was highly popular among jazz audiences. The fact that Time Out became such a huge success took the world by surprise, including the members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. TOGETHER ON THE SAME DE-LUXE FOLD OPEN 2-LP PACKAGE !
